The fair is a twelve day event, held annually during the month of October or November and is believed to be the largest camel trade fair all over the world.

Like the other fairs and festivals, Pushkar fair has also its history which has been scripted in Hindu Scriptures. Accordingly is is one of the five holy cities, blessed with the one of the two shrines devoted to Lord Brahma in India. Myths says that a battle between Lord Brahma and demon Vajra Nabh, led the petals of Lord’s lotus flower float down on the earth and formed places in and around Pushkar. Since then the place got surrounded by 500 temples and 52 palaces, maintained by bygone kings and rulers.

Thousand of devotees, from different parts of the globe visit the place on the day of Poornima in the month of Kartika(as per the Hindu religious calendar). They believe to take a holy dip in the Pushkar lake, which is said to be the divine abode of about 330 million Hindu deities.

Pushkar fair presents the remarkable fusion of religious belief and commercial taste, existing in the society. Apart from making a religious trip to the town, it is a place where one can see ‘mela’(fair) featuring traders dealing in camel cattle, ethnic artifacts and lot more. The camel fair is one of the major attraction of the festival. About 20, 000 camels are decorated with colorful cloths and exhibited in the fair. Besides, cultural programmes, including folk dances, dramas, song, camel races also draws visitors attention. They also receive the chance to participate in traditional programmes and explore rural life style of the state.

Puskhar fair is also a great place for shopholics. A number stalls display a riot of antique trinkets, leather items, glitzy bangles, clothes and accessories, that holds the fine touch of Rajasthan culture and tradition. One can also pamper their taste bud with have delicacies like Dal, Bati, Churma, Makka ki Roti, Missi ki Roti,, Garlic Chutney etc.

The nearest railhead to Pushkar is at Ajmer. Daily trains like Shatabdi Exp, Intercity Exp connects the place with metro cities in India

By Road:
The roadways to Rajasthan are smooth and one can have comfortable journey by bus. Pushkar is only 11 km from Ajmer and it takes only 2 hours journey from Jaipur.
