Fog in Delhi stranded many authors and the visa authorities allegedly played havoc with the schedule, but in Jaipur the sun shone benevolently as the Jaipur Literature Festival, touted as the ‘‘greatest literary fair on this planet’’ by celebrity editor Tina Brown, kicked off to a flamboyant start on Thursday with the glitterati from Mumbai, New Delhi and London in attendance.

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka’s morning session, however, was called off because the author couldn’t make it on time — his flight from Delhi was cancelled. Girish Karnad’s flight was also delayed and his keynote address had to be rescheduled. Henry Louis Gates Jr, author of ‘‘Thirteen ways of looking at a black man’’, and Andrew Lycett, biographer of books on Dylan Thomas and Rudyard Kipling, could not get visa clearances and had to cancel their visits. Shabana Azmi barely made it on time for the evening session on Thursday where she read from her mother Shaukat Kaifi’s memoirs, ‘‘Kaifi aur main’’.

Yet the festival had abundant energy with writers, authors and publishers mingling with the audience, students and delegates alike. One of the most stimulating sessions of the day was held in the Mughal Tent (now called the ‘Merrill Lynch Mughal Tent’ — sponsors are taking note of the festival’s growing prominence, just as the festival itself is called ‘DSC Jaipur Literature Festival’).

Italian intellectual and publisher Roberto Calasso provided some fantastic insights into how mythology and ritual are violent and innate human impulses with which mankind has always had a problematic relationship. His theory that the internet revolution as a form of mankind’s desire to connect with ‘‘manas’’ (the sense-mind in the yogic world) found its share of sceptics, but it did uplift the audience to loftier realms of thought.

West Bengal government has comprehensive plans to develop tourism infrastructure in places like Belpahari and Jhargram in West Midnapore and Bankura districts, in order to offset Maoist influence.

According to a PTI report, the West Bengal government has comprehensive plans to develop tourism infrastructure in places like Belpahari and Jhargram in West Midnapore and Bankura districts, in order to offset Maoist influence. Speaking on the sidelines of the 72nd Travel and Tourism Fair (TTF) in Kolkata recently, Manabendra Mukherjee, Tourism Minister, West Bengal said, “In areas like Belpahari, Jhargram, Bankura, Santiniketan and Burdwan, we plan to develop infrastructure by inviting small investors. We will invite small investors to provide facilities like tents where tourists go, but prefer to return the same day because of lack of facilities.”

Mukherjee said that the intention is to make tourists stay in those places for two to three days and also visit nearby places. Work has already begun in Jhargram in West Midnapore district. He said that the state government has identified areas in the dense forests of Jhargram, including Maoist infested Chilikagarh.

Nawang Rigzin, Tourism Minister, Jammu and Kashmir who was also present on the occasion, invited tourists to visit his state. The three-day Fair (July 11-13, 2009) is being attended by over 250 participants, including representatives from 26 states and nine countries- Bangladesh, Mauritius, Bhutan, Dubai, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Switzerland and Thailand. From here, the fair proceed to Gujarat.

Sikkim witnessed around 2.80 lakh tourist arrivals in the first five months of this year, in spite of economic slowdown and limited infrastructure in the hospitality sector.

Sikkim witnessed around 2.80 lakh tourist arrivals in the first five months of this year, in spite of economic slowdown and limited infrastructure in the hospitality sector. According to figures released by the tourism officials, a staggering 35 per cent growth has been recorded in the arrivals of domestic tourists between January and May this year at 2.73 lakh as against the corresponding tally of two lakh last year. During the same period the number of foreign tourists dipped by nearly ten per cent to 7,812, as against 8,690 last year.

Tourism officials informed that most domestic tourists came from various destinations in West Bengal. A large number of people from the Southern and Western states of India visited places like Nathu La this summer. On the dip in the foreign tourists’ numbers this year, the officials attributed it to the ongoing economic downturn, as well as the perception of terrorism and other insurgencies in various parts of the country.

The officials added that post-monsoon months the state may witness a surge in the number of visitors to the border state as has been the case in the past years, to enable Sikkim to achieve the target of five lakh tourists. The state has declared the year 2010 as the Year of Tourism and has lined 13 festivals to woo visitors in its drive to develop the tourism industry as its main source of revenue and employment in the long term.

Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTDC) will develop three circuits comprising of tourist attractions to revive and promote Caravan Tourism

Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTDC) will develop three circuits comprising of tourist attractions to revive and promote Caravan Tourism. Bal Mukund Namdeo, Chief General Manager, MPSTDC said, “We are developing three circuits, Shivpuri-Orchha-Khajuraho, Bhopal-Tawa -Pachmarhi and Indore- Mandu-Maheshwar.” He said that all facilities including camping will be developed by January next year for tourists visiting these sites by caravans. Areas for make-shift tents, water and other facilities will come up at these places to promote Caravan Tourism.

As per MPSTDC sources, the number of foreign tourists, especially from Netherlands, visiting places of tourist interest in Madhya Pradesh by caravans has reduced in the last decade possibly due to the need for more facilities. Though the famous tourist attraction Khajuraho, known for magnificent temples, has a camping site, the number of foreign tourists visiting it by caravans has dropped as well.

New Delhi: After space tourism, it is astro-tourism that is catching up people’s fancy, courtesy the ensuing total solar eclipse. Air charter and tourist operators in India are receiving an overwhelming response for chartered flights to view total solar eclipse of longest duration in 21st century. All set to take place on July 22, the eclipse holds special interest for scientists and general public as its path of totality passes through thickly populated western, central, eastern and northeastern regions of India. Cox & Kings, a travel agency claims that both amateur astronomers and others are booking for the Boeing-737 that they have hired for the two-hour journey from Delhi to Gaya in Bihar to watch the rare total solar eclipse. Each ticket is priced at rupees 79,000 (around 1,618 dollars). “Well, we have got very strong response. The airline that we are flying has 21 seats facing the sun and 21 more window seats, which are facing away from the sun, facing the earth. We call them the ’sun side seats’ and the ‘earth side seats’. The sun side seats, which will have direct view of the eclipse, cost about 79,000 rupees. We are actually getting very strong response form the amateur astronomy circles in India, from the corporate world and a wide variety of audience,” said Nikhil Pawar, Scientific Officer, Space Technology and Education Private Limited, Mumbai. On July 22, the moon will totally eclipse the sun after a decade. The next total solar eclipse will take place again only in 2034. People on board these chartered flights can watch the eclipse for almost 10 times more than those on ground. And, there are reasons attributed to such a phenomenon. “Theoretically the totality (of the eclipse) can be only 7 minutes 30 seconds. So that is the maximum you can get, if you are stationed at one place and during that period, by chasing the moon shadow they (people in airplanes) increase the time to 74 minutes that means almost ten times than the theoretically maximum possible,” Piyush Pandey, Director, Nehru Planetarium, Mumbai. Meanwhile, hotel owners in Patna are preparing to welcome the rush of astro-tourist guests expected to halt here. “The solar eclipse on the 22nd can be seen from Bihar. The tourists will come on the 21st and 12 rooms have been booked for them in our hotel,” said Vinay Pandey, owner Hotel Republic, Patna. In India, the eclipse will commence soon after sunrise. Surat and Vadodra in Gujarat, Indore and Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh apart from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Patna in Bihar are stated to be the ideal locations for good views of the total solar eclipse. It provides a rare opportunity to view and study this grand spectacle of nature. The partial phase of the eclipse will be visible throughout the country. Astro-tourism comes as a surprise in a country where people for ages have been considering eclipses especially solar eclipses as bad omen. The belief that the sun is at the mercy of two evil planets, Rahu and Ketu causing the eclipse, still prevails among a large section of people despite propagation of scientific temper among the masses.
